Introduction
- Our dogs love to play. With each day, we see them interact with each other on a level we do not understand. Dogs need a pack and not just a human pack either. I have dealt with a great many dogs while working in a rescue shelter. I helped dogs become social by walking them with other dogs, putting them in playgroups, and doing meet and greets with potential owners. I have seen both the good and the bad side of play. Some dogs are dominant, aggressive, possessive, and overall territorial when they do not get proper upbringing and boundaries from their birth parents. Here we look at the many true benefits of dog play.
Physical Benefits of Play
- Exercise and Weight Management: Dogs who play and run and chase have a better overall health status. Play helps dogs stay active and maintain a healthy weight. I have seen so many dogs over the years who have not had proper exercise and diet be in less physical shape than their healthier counterparts. The more they run and challenge their body much like people, the healthier and happier they are.
- Muscle Development and Coordination: different types of play can improve muscle strength and coordination. Running is good for the heart. The tug of war is stability and power. Healthier and more (fit) dogs tend to be more agile as well.
- Cardiovascular Health: Daily exercise relieves the pressure on the heart by allowing all good blood flow to the other vital organs in the body. A healthy heart is essential to the overall conditioning of our dogs. I have seen many older dogs, have heart problems and also are overweight. Keeping up with your pet’s health is essential to ensuring they live a long and happy life.
Mental Benefits of Play
- Mental Stimulation: play can keep a dog’s mind sharp and prevent boredom. The more we work them with games and commands the better. They thrive on learning sit is up to us to help them learn all the fundamentals in life. Play, learning, and having self-control are the keys to a well-rounded dog. Watch your dog next time you ask them to do something and see what changes in their body. It is in their eyes, their stance and their tail wag
- Stress Relief: Discuss how play can reduce anxiety and stress in dogs. Dogs who engage in regular play typically have less stress or anxiety than dogs who are kept indoors. Regular walks, hikes, or trips to the beach can prove very beneficial to dogs. Play can help prevent destructive behaviors by providing an outlet for energy.
Always remember that our pets rely on us for structure. It is up to us to create stability in them.
